This is a correction...the man in the picture is James G Dempster, he came to Feild in 1953 along with Mat Foster and John Hewson. He taught chemistry and math. To this day I still remember the meaning of, Solute, Solvent, and Solution. In one class we managed to create some hydrogen, Mr. Dempster attached a hose to the apparatus and was going to burn the hydrogen....but the hose was too short and instead of a POP we had an explosion and glass went everywhere. Two students had minor cuts and he spent the rest of the afternoon explaining that a longer hose is required so that the flame doesn't travel back to the beaker. I think that he went to teach on the mainland.
