Senator William Rompkey

He has served in the political arena in Canada for almost four decades. From 1972-1995 he was a member of The House of Commons representing the Newfoundland and Labrador riding of Grand Falls White Bay Labrador. From 1995-2011 he was a member of the Senate having been appointed by former Prime Minister John Chretien. During his tenure in politics he served on innumerable committees of the House and the Senate. He served as a Minister in the Chretien government for many years. You all know I am talking about William Rompkey who reached his 75th. birthday this year and so has resigned his Senate seat after a long and productive career.

It was Bill Rompkey who had the idea that we should have a plaque commemorating the supreme sacrifice Feildians made during WW I. He was instrumental along with Dick Cook in bringing that project to fruition and today we have a wonderful piece of artwork in the museum at Beaumont Hamel which says that Feildians were there.

Bill Rompkey is not solely defined by his teaching career and his political longevity. He is also an author. His publications include the following; The Story of Labrador, From the Coast to Far Inland, St. John's and the Battle of the Atlantic and Your Daughter Fanny. All of his publications have as a backdrop his native province. He remains the consummate teacher in his writings. I know all Feildians would like to wish Bill his wife Carolyn and their children Peter and Hilary great success in any future endeavours. Thank you, Bill, for all your hard work on our behalf.

Old Feildians Reach Milestones

It was a wonderful turnout of Old Boys at Winterholme on Monday, 20 June to celebrate the birthdays of several boys. Dr. Nigel Rusted, Mr. William Neal and Mr. Edwin H. Press were presented with certificates of birthday wishes from His Honour The Lieutenant Governor John Crosbie.
The weather outside was wet and cold but inside our honorees were treated to warm wishes from all those present. The lunch donated by The Sundance was delicious and disappeared quickly. Thank you very much John for this generous donation. After the LG spoke and presented certificates the three honorees cut the cake from Manna Bakery and Happy Birthday was sung.

A great time was had by all. Our next lunch will be at The Sundance on July 25 at noon as usual. More information will be forth coming. Below are some pictures of our celebration.

Another Old Feildian Receives Award

William G. (Bill) Tilley

Boys, I am always amazed when I hear about Old Boys who are still making a significant contribution to society when one would think they would be resting on their laurels. Not so with William G. (Bill) Tilley. Last week William Tilley was awarded the Senior Volunteer of the Year by the City of St. John's at the council meeting of May 30, 2011. On June 1 he was recognized by the province with the Senior of the Year Distinction Award. We all know Bill Tilley as he served as Drum Major and led the CLB in their parades from 1939 to 2002, that's 63 years! He has been an active member of the brigade for 85 years. Currently he is the archivist for the CLB and when that historic building and its contents were destroyed in 1992 he set about to restore the archive and the result can be seen in the new building at its familiar place on Harvey Road. He still spends most mornings there in the archive. Three cheers and a tiger for William G. Tilley.

Bastow Obit.

Hello Boys,

Gordon John Collier Bastow died  this past Tuesday, June 1, 2011 at The Miller Centre in St. John's. Gordon was the brother of a good friend of mine Dave Bastow.

Dave who was an Old Feildian who sang in The Cathedral Choir when I was a boy just joining. As I became older Dave and I sang in other choirs such as The Festival Choir under Ignatius Rumbolt and later Don Cook. Much later in life I sang with Gordon in The Echoes Choir which Ann Abraham directed. We used to sing one Sunday a month at St. Luke's Home. Gordon was an avid Feildian and we spoke often about some of the masters he had while he attended there. Many of you know Hugh Miller who was Gordon's nephew as Hugh's mother was also a Bastow. Some of you know Tony and Doug Bastow whose father was Gerald Bastow, another of Gordon's brothers.

Holidays

Boys,

I am in Florida for a couple of weeks. I will be home for the lunch on Monday the 30th. As many of you know Dr. E. David Morgan will be receiving an honorary degree from MUN on the 26 of May, I think. Bill Abraham is hoping to get him to come to our lunch. I am always amazed at how wide and far the Feildian family stretches. We have Munden bray in Papua New Guinea, David Morgan in England and Eric Pitcher in South Africa. This does not include all the Boys in the States and those in Canada.

Another old boy, Senator William Rompkey, will be leaving the Senate sometime this year. What a great political career he has had. Do we know of any other Feildians who served in the House of Commons as I cannot remember off the top of my head right now.

Ellen and I are soaking up the sun for the next few days. I am planning bringing a healthy dose of good weather back with me as I see from the weather in NL that it is 4C and cloudy.

See you all on the 30th.
